In the European board gaming industry, most of the titles are either released in October (at the Essen fair) or in February (at Nuernberg). However, does this really make sense? I mean, we all have seen the glut of games at Essen, way too many games to even peruse, let alone play.
Of course, releasing games in time for the Christmas season makes sense in general terms. At this time, a lot of games are bought by families as presents. Yet in my opinion there are still too many games appearing at the same time.
Taking a look at the electronic games industry, some people have similiar thoughts:
Glen Schofield, head of EA Redwood Shores, who did e.g. Dead Space (by the way, a game you have to play!), states in an interview with "GamesIndustry" that Electonic Arts released many games at the same time in late 2008. Therefore they needed a lot of money to market the individual titles.
Schofield continues that movies often start around Christmas as well. However, blockbusters are also released in summer. EA will probably release games at any time of the year in the future. When a game is good, it will find its audience.
